In the actual play, this scene runs a bit differently. Johnstone gives birth to two healthy little babies, and Lyons takes one of them. Shortly thereafter, Lyons gives Johnstone fifty pounds (a fair amount of cash) and fires her. An outraged Johnstone attempts to take her baby back, or call the police, but Lyons warns her against legal measures--Johnstone 'sold' her baby, or at least gave it away, which is itself illegal. Furthermore, Lyons warns that, if two twins, separated at birth, learn they are twins later on, they shall both immediately die. Dramatic Chord Here!
